The City of Victoria is receiving $224,000 from the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada 150 Fund to host a ‘First Night’ Celebration at the Inner Harbour on New Year’s Eve Saturday December 31, 2016.

Victoria is one of nineteen municipalities across Canada to receive support from the Canada 150 Fund. The ‘Spirit of 150 Victoria – First Night’ will be a major kick-off event to launch Canada’s 150th anniversary. The event will include a family-friendly, multi-cultural, live stage show and will be complete with food vendors and end with a fireworks display.

The fireworks display will be timed with displays at the other 18 locations across the country with large screens simulcasting the festivities coast to coast. According to the city’s media release, the festivities will take place from 5pm to 9pm. No word on if anything else will continue or be held at another location until midnight pacific time.

The Greater Victoria Spirit Committee and the City of Victoria will be reaching out to regional partners to invite their participation in and support of this milestone in Canada’s history.

The event line-up will be announced in late November.
