Implosion Explosion at the Phillips Backyard is this weekend and is the final festival of Phillips Brewery’s 2022 summer concert series. The lineup features local favourites, critically acclaimed Canadian artists, up and coming international acts and well known festival vets.
It’s sure to be another fantastic weekend at Phillips with a weather forecast that looks to be just about perfect.

Saturday
St. Paul & The Broken Bones
St. Paul & The Broken Bones are a soul band from Birmingham, Alabama. The 8-piece band is sure to be a crowd pleaser for a city that has its own share of multi-instrument soul/funk bands.
Sampa The Great
Sampa The Great is a Zambian-born Australia-based rapper. She is a multi-time winner of Australian Recording Industry Association awards and the first artist to win the Australian Music Prize. This year she has performed Coachella and Lollapalooza among other major festivals.
Carmanah
Local Victoria favourites Carmanah really don’t need much introduction. They have been selling out shows in Victoria for more than a decade. They last performed her at the All Ways Home Festival last September.
The Bankes Brothers
Victoria’s The Bankes Brothers are an alternative rock/R&B band that formed in 2017. They take inspiration from artists like Paul Simon and Otis Redding. The band is lead by Morgan and Nelson Bankes on vocals. Nelson’s voice reminds us a bit like Ben Ottewell from Gomez. They’ve been wowing audiences at cover shows at bars to festivals like All Ways Home Festival in Langford in 2021 and Garden City Grooves.
SLEEPSHAKE
There’s nothing sleepy about SLEEPSHAKE. Little bit White Stripes, little bit Black Pistol Fire, little bit Reignwolf… SLEEPSHAKE will kick off Implosion Explosion with high energy rock.

Charlotte Day Wilson
Charlotte Day Wilson is a Toronto R&B singer-songwriter. This year she was nominated for three Juno Awards for Songwriter of The Year, Producer of The Year and Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of The Year. She last performed in Victoria at Rifflandia 2017.
Andy Shauf
Andy Shauf is a singer-songwriter from Regina. In 2020 his band Foxwarren was nominated for Alternative Album of The Year. That same year Barack Obama featured Shauf’s song ‘The Neon Skyline on his 2020 summer playlist. Shauf last performed in Victoria at Rifflandia 2018.
Zella Day
Zella Day is a singer-songwriter from Pinetop-Lakeside, Arizona. She has opened for Fitz and The Tantrums and Michael Franti and been featured in songs with Lana Del Rey and Weyes Blood. In 2016 she was performing to huge crowds at Coachella in Bonnaroo at 21 years old. I was at that Coachella and her set was one of the best of the festival.
Nicky Mackenzie
Nicky Mackenzie is a singer-songwriter from Salt Spring Island. She first gained some national attention showing off her jazzy vocals as a contestant on CTV music reality show The Launch in 2018 when she was 16. In the last year she has performed in Victoria at the All Ways Home Festival in Langford and at the 2021 edition of the Jon and Roy Holiday Special.
FRANKIIE
FRANKIIE are band from Vancouver. The four-piece describe their music as ‘Dream-Rock’. Their debut album ‘Forget Your Head’ was released in September of 2019 and last performed in Victoria as part of the Jon and Roy Holiday Special in December 2019
