The City of Victoria is looking for your input on the City’s draft Music Strategy that will outline the role of music in Victoria.
The Victoria Music Strategy will also include a series of recommendations to grow the music scene.
An online survey is now available to fill out until Friday September 17, 2021. There will also be an open house information session where people will have the opportunity to talk to city staff about the strategy and give their ideas. Participants will also have the chance to win a gift basket of music themed items from local businesses. The open house takes place at The Neighbourhood Hub (709 & 711 Douglas Street) Saturday September 11, 2021 from 10:30am to 1:30pm.
The online survey wants your feed back in five areas:
1. Removing regulatory barriers and creating music friendly places
2. Preserving existing spaces and encouraging the development of new spaces
3. Building local capacity for artists to develop their music careers
4. Growing audiences and expanding access to music in all its forms
5. Seeking partnerships and collaborations to explore new innovative music platforms and experiences.
“These final engagement steps for our new Music Strategy will help build the city’s musical roadmap and allow the public to understand what the key priorities are,” said Victoria Music Advisory Committee Chair Kathryn Calder. “Some of the actions include creating opportunities for the public to continue experiencing musical encounters, and prioritizing access and support for underrepresented communities to nurture talent and share culturally diverse music practices.”
In 2019, consulting firm Sound Diplomacy, the Victoria Music Advisory Committee and City staff developed the foundation of the strategy through mapping analysis, literature review, roundtable discussions with key local music industry groups, as well as broader public input through a previous survey.
