Downtown Victoria is getting a new music venue.

‘The Downbeat’ will open at 1325 Government Street in September 2024. The new club is at the former site of Hush Nightclub which closed in 2014.

The announcement was made on social media Wednesday, nearly a decade after Hush hosted it’s final event on July 26, 2014. The Downbeat will be run by Victoria DJ Daniel James of ‘Just Beats Inc.’ and business partners Mark Williams and Karim Saryani.

The news was broken by Victoria electronic music Facebook Page ‘Victronic‘. In the post, James says he sees this as an opportunity to solidify much sought after space for both underground electronic and live music in Victoria.

After forming Just Beats Inc. in Calgary, James moved to Victoria in 2020. He is also the head of event promotion company Footwork Entertainment.

James’ company is actively accepting submissions from local DJs to join their roster for the new venue and also looking to partner with local music promoters for special events.
