Nicolas West, the drummer and lead vocalist for Victoria band Electric Jane, has died. He was 26.
West and his brother Daniel MacAlpine went missing while kayaking from D’Arcy Island to Island View Beach Park Saturday April 20, 2024.
A search was launched after the two men failed to arrive at their destination. Sidney/North Saanich RCMP, Central Saanich Police, PEMO Search and Rescue, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and the Canadian Coast Guard searched for West and MacAlpine Sunday and found the kayak on Henry Island in San Juan County. There was no sign of the two men.
The U.S. Coast Guard also launched a helicopter to aid in the search Sunday.
On Monday, searchers focused their efforts around San Juan Island, Lopez Island and through the Haro Strait. There were also teams searching north of Coal Island.
The two men’s bodies were recovered off of San Juan Island by American authorities. The first body was found Monday afternoon floating in the water against rocks on the west side of the island. The second body was reported Tuesday morning floating in Middle Channel, south of Cattle Point.
