Bass trombonist Robert Fraser started the show with opening remarks and introductions.
Chantal Kreviazuk performed two 50 minute sets. Both sets had a mix of favourites from her 20+ year career and new music from her latest album ‘Hard Sail’, or what she referred to as “Hard Snail” after telling the audience a funny story about a phone interview where a reporter repeatedly got the album title wrong. The two sets totaled 17 songs with a two song encore of Christmas hymn ‘O Holy Night’ and Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’. The only disappointment for me was that she didn’t perform first hit single ‘God Made Me’ which was charting on the Much Music Countdown at this time twenty years ago.
Touring with Kreviazuk were drummer Jason Pierce and cellist Kevin Fox whom at one point broke a string. This led to fun time killing banter with conductor Giuseppe Pietraroia that Kreviazuk teased and referred to as “Joey” throughout the show.
The show was part concert and part comedy show with Kreviazuk telling stories about her kids, her marriage with Our Lady Peace‘s Raine Maida and witty banter with her bandmates and Symphony conductor “Joey”. The combination made for an entertaining two hours of music and laughs.
