Rifflandia 2014 Primer- SaturdayWith more than 160 performers at Rifflandia 2014 and more local talent in the lineup that ever before I thought I would offer up some video examples of live performances or audio samples to help you research local bands and DJs. I also provide comments about artists I have covered. This is part 3 of a 4 part series of articles. If I’ve missed anyone with Victoria connections, let me know and I’ll update the list. 12:30pm
Kytami at Royal Athletic Park – Kytami is a violinist who combines classical music sound with modern electronic music. Last year she won Live Act of The Year at the Vancouver Island Music Awards and Electronic/Dance Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards. If there’s one day you should make it to Royal Athletic Park early, it’s Saturday for Kytami. Below is a video of Kytami performing ‘On The Floor & Big Dipper’ live at Shambhala 2013.

BUM at Royal Athletic Park – BUM is Victoria punk rock band reuniting for the first time in 20 years. One of the founding members of the band, Rob Nesbitt, owns/operates Pic-a-Flic Video in Cook Street Village. Below is video of BUM’s final show with Rob in Seattle at the Crocodile Cafe on June 3, 1994.

The New Pornographers at Royal Athletic Park- Why are The New Pornographers on a list of “Victoria Artists”? Well, Kathryn Calder is from here and still lives here. Below is a video of The New Pornographers performing ‘Brill Bruisers’ live at 89.3 The Current’s music studio in Minnesota in August.

DJ Tim Horner at Victoria Public Market – Tim Horner is a DJ, a promoter and manager of La Ti Da Records. His bio on the Rifflandia website says he’ll be “soul floorshakers, mod anthems, power pop gems and garage punk killers.” Unfortunately I’m unable to find any examples of his sets online.

AppleCat at Market Square – Applecat is a DJ who grew up in Vancouver, but now lives here in Victoria. Below is a set she performed at Burning Man last week

222 at Wood Hall – 222 (pronounced “Two Twenty Two”) are a punk/funk band from Victoria. Below is a link to a cell phone video of 222 performing ‘Mi Casa Es Tuya’ live at Copper Owl back in May.

Mozart’s Sister at Alix Goolden Hall – Mozart’s Sister is a “dirt pop” artist who currently hails from Montreal, but Caila Thompson-Hannant was raised here in Victoria. Below is a live music video of Mozart’s sister performing ‘Mozart’s Sister’ in a kickboxing gym for Chart Attack back in March.

Isobel Trigger at the Metro Theatre – Isobel Trigger are an alt-pop rock band. They were Zone Band of The Month back in April. Below is a video of their performance of single ‘Dust and Bones’ live at their ‘Nocturnal’ EP Release show at Club 9ONE9 (now Distrikt Nightclub) on August 9th

Jacques Porveau at Wolf/Sheep Arthouse – Jacques Porveau is a DJ part of the sub|division extended family. His bio on the Rifflandia website states he is “one of Victoria’s most dedicated supporters of real quality underground sh**.” Below is a mix he posted on his SounCloud page about 3 months ago.

Kandle & The Krooks at Alix Goolden Hall – Kandle & The Krooks perform ‘indie swamp rock’ according to Kandle Osborne’s Facebook Page. Kandle is originally from Victoria, but now lives in Montreal. She is the daughter of 54-40’s Neil Osborne. Below is a video of Kandle and The Krooks performing ‘Oh Great’ in their Montreal Studio for the Montreal Gazette back in February.

Sam Weber at The Metro Theatre – Sam Weber is a singer-songwriter/guitarist/producer who was recently signed by Cordova Bay Records. When not performing his own music he can be found playing guitar with Thieves, Dougal Bain, Chris Ho and few other music projects. Below is a video of Sam Weber performing his latest single ‘August’ at Upstairs Cabaret last November.

LIINKS at ANIAN – LIINKS is a new project by Georgia Murray and DWhiz. Under the new band name the duo was named the ‘Future Star of The Month’ for April 2014 on Bell Media radio stations across Canada including Victoria’s 107.3 KOOL FM. Below is audio of their first single ‘The Break’ that received significant radio airplay.

Monolithium at Lucky Bar – Monolithium is a DJ in Victoria. Chris Long also heads sub|division and is heavily involved with Rifflandia as one of the driving forces of the Rifflandia magazine. Below is a SoundCloud stream of Monolithium’s ‘Tantrummm’ EP.

Neon Steve at Distrikt Nightclub- Neon Steve is a Victoria DJ/Producer. Below is a mix Neon Steve did for this year’s Shambhala Music Festival

The New Groovement at Wood Hall – The New Groovement are a 11-piece high energy funk/hip-hop band that also blends in some R&B and soul meant to get you dancing. Below is video of The New Groovement performing ‘It’s Alright’ live at the Victoria Ska Fest stage for Victoria Celebrates Canada Day
