SUMMARY:Wonderment 2025: Mike Shannon (Live)\, The Mole\, (Live)\, Tobias\, Sarah-Hannah\, Leanne & Mr. Moe at Songhees Park Plaza
DESCRIPTION:Note: While this event is FREE\, it is not a free event to produce in the community. While modestly funded by government grants\, Wonderment needs your help to keep these sorts of events going. Please bring cash to the event to donate\, or donate online through the website donate button at www.wonderment.ca \n~ MIKE SHANNON (LIVE\, BERLIN) ~ \nMike Shannon navigates from the vibrant techno scenes of Ontario to the influential circles of Berlin. From his teenage years\, Shannon’s rapid mixing skills and deep crates have garnered acclaim\, reflecting his deep roots in the Detroit and Chicago techno soundscapes. \nMike’s career trajectory took a significant turn as he founded the labels Cynosure and Haunt Recordings\, platforms that showcase his knack for a jazz-infused electronic sound that continually redefines minimal techno. His collaborative projects\, like the Blue Fields trio\, highlight his versatility and willingness to transcend traditional musical boundaries. \nNow based in Germany\, Shannon is not just a producer and DJ but also a curator deeply involved in the evolution of electronic music. His productions and live performances reveal an artist committed to innovation—employing modern modular synthesis techniques and an ever-evolving creative process that challenges and delights. \nEmbodying the essence of Detroit and Chicago influences\, Shannon crafts a unique sonic signature that defines Canadian minimal house/techno. His commitment to live improvisation and his role as a curator of Cynosure Recordings highlight his influential contributions to the genre. \n~ THE MOLE (LIVE) ~ \nKnown for his love of sonic collage and musical noodling\, Colin de la Plante aka The Mole boasts a long and colourful list of releases—for labels like Perlon\, Ostgut Ton\, Slices of Life\, Haunt\, Musique Risquée\, New Kanada\, Internasjonal\, BLKRTZ and Wagon Repair\, and most recently releasing on Circus Company\, Maybe Tomorrow and Sound of Vast. Seventies Hungarian funk\, Youtube outsider artists\, the dustiest of old Bollywood relics—all is fair game when it comes time for The Mole to pull either inspiration or wax for his house-heavy DJ sets and live shows. Low-key and loved by many\, he possesses a steadfast commitment to keeping it groovy above all… “And weird!” From Victoria to Montreal to Berlin and back again\, you can catch The Mole on his CFUV 101.9 FM radio show “This Ain’t Berlin”. Having performed live as part of No Way Back at Wonderment 2023 and 2024\, The Mole returns to the Johnson Street Bridge for a solo live set opening for longtime conspirator of pleasure\, Mike Shannon. \n~ TOBIAS (DJ) ~ \nMentored by DJs Robby Luv Dub (Chicago) and Jess Conn-Potegal (Vancouver) in the aesthetics of deep house\, Tobias went on to discover Detroit techno\, taking it as his early mission to disseminate the sounds of Afrofuturist sonics across the Pacific NorthWest region. \nTobias has dj’ed worldwide\, from Eyebeam in NYC to Amsterdam’s Melkweg and STEIM\, Barcelona’s Coldcreation Gallery to Fukhouse in Toronto. Since the pandemic\, he has been part of an active and evolving network of online Twitch DJs\, with a focus on vinyl mixing.\n \n~ DJ LEANNE (DJ) ~ \nDJ Leanne is the owner & operator of GirlOnWax Entertainment\, and is a large contributor to Canada’s thriving DJ scene after establishing the first west coast DJ School and broadcast work with house music radio shows. Prior to GirlOnWax\, Leanne was the booking liaison and publicist for Vancouver’s legendary underground dance venue Sonar. In her long and successful DJ career\, Leanne has spun alongside the best world-renowned DJs in the business: Kaskade\, Boy George\, Armand Van Helden & Mark Farina\, to name a few. Leanne has also played alongside high profile celebrity artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and at Sarah McLachlin’s Lilith Fair. \n~ SARAH-HANNAH (DJ) ~ \nDJ Sarah-Hannah Bedard started djing in 1996 and making electronic music in 1998. As one of the first female DJs and producers in Western Canada\, Sarah-Hannah was a pioneer in the electronic music scene in the mid to late 1990s. As an event coordinator\, she has produced many successful events in Victoria and Vancouver over the years. Sarah-Hannah also enjoys playing guitar\, ukulele\, banjolele\, tamboura and singing vocals in various band projects in Victoria\, and is working in her home studio on a solo project of original songs. \n~ MR. MOE (DJ) ~ \nMr. Moe has been deep in the DJ game spanning multiple generations and is a master of his craft. Spanning dub reggae to deep house and detroit techno\, no one works the dance floor quite like Moe. \n~ ~ ~ \nSonghees Park Plaza is adjacent to the Johnson Street Bridge on the SW side of the bridge). As this is an urban venue on the inner harbour that extends into the evening hours\, parents should be mindful of their children. There will be no concession on site\, but there are nearby cafes and restaurants. Please come prepared with water\, food\, and sunscreen… and please pack-it-in\, pack-it-out! \nWonderment takes place on the unceded territories of the L?k?????n peoples\, the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations.\nWonderment 2025 is supported by the Government of Canada\, the Province of BC\, the BC Arts Council\, the Capital Regional District\, and the City of Victoria. He is a genuinely unique figure within the European music landscape\, defining a world of his own by navigating a balance between improvisational acoustic and electronic music forms. \n“Rohrer has developed his very own procedures and aesthetics to create a new form of captivating music that is consequently built from the deeper grounds of rhythm…opening up truly new dimensions.” – London Jazz News \n~ ELISA THORN ~\nPolaris Prize Nominee\nHarp & Electronics\nFrom Vancouver \nElisa Thorn graduated from the UBC School of Music in 2011\, and since that time has become a much sought after addition to the Canadian creative music scene\, known for her skilled use of extended techniques\, electronic effects\, and unconventional uses of harp. \nHer music\, which combines influences of post-rock\, jazz\, classical and indie\, is propelled by two artistic objectives: firstly\, how to create music that is both abstract and accessible; and secondly\, how to lead a band with harp in a way does not compromise sensitivity with it’s boldness\, or aesthetic beauty with it’s curiosity. \nInterested in the intersection between composed and improvised music\, she is involved with many projects including HUE\, The Giving Shapes and Gentle Party\, who released an album under the Phonometrograph label that was longer-listed for the Polaris Prize in 2017. \n~ EVA PEKÁROVÁ ~\nFujara (Slovakian Shepherd’s Flute) & Electronics\nFrom Vancouver \nEva Pekárová is a Film Composer\, Musician\, and Multidisciplinary Artist based in Vancouver\, Canada. Originally from the small town of Pieš?any\, Slovakia\, she began her piano studies there at the age of 4. \nEva’s diverse background drives her to be interested in and tackle a wide range of genres and instrumentation in her musical practice. She is most interested in innovating musical genres with the unexpected\, playing with musical boundaries\, and is known for her melodically strong work. Currently\, she is in the finalizing stages of an innovative album focusing on traditional Eastern European Instruments while taking on various film projects. \nEva has a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design with a specialization in Film\, Video\, + Integrated Media. She has also studied film scoring and worked with a live orchestra under Vasilis Milesis in Athens\, Greece. Her extensive research and professional engagement with film production gives her a unique edge as a film composer. \nEva’s current project is an album giving voice to traditional Slavic Instruments\, particularly the Fujara from her home country of Slovakia. Eva’s creative approach to the music in this album involves a commitment to innovation through genre and instrumental application. \nThe Fujara holds great cultural significance to Eva’s home country\, and is tied to both folk music and ancient hand-crafting techniques. Folk instruments should be protected and they should have the opportunity to evolve in new ways as music evolves as well. Eva hopes that by innovating their application her album will serve to both share it with diverse audiences and create space for the Fujara on the modern stage. \nBy reimagining the traditional instruments of our past in ways that elevate their importance for our future\, Eva imagines a collaborative coming together of musicians and audiences alike. To celebrate our diverse backgrounds\, deepen our appreciation\, and creatively approach the way we interact with ancient instruments moving forward. \n~ FAUN.A ~ \nFaun.a is a musician combining organic and electronic instruments with our environments\, to create songs to daydream to.. Started as a looping project in 2017\, faun.a continually shifts and shapes into new forms\, using atomospheric sound as the template. Currently exploring the sounds that surround us and attaching them through geopoetics\, relationship to land\, adding to the ever expanding noise. \n~ ZÜGELLOS ~ \nOriginally from Galicia way back when the shtetles still stood\, Zügellos roamed the countryside until retiring to the far reaches of a land called Lekwungen. Here the fair peoples sold and rationed out their own herbal remedies unworried about the dark times behind them\, or the dark times ahead. In this environment\, Zügellos found their calling – altering waveshapes and ear canals for the pleasures of the unknown. \n~ Lekwungen Traditional Dancers ~ \nThe Story of the Lekwungen Traditional Dancers as told by Lyla Dick. \nBack in 1978\, late uncle Ray Peter from the Cowichan tribe started the dance group at the friendship centre along with our late father Jim and late Bob Malcom and uncles Butch and Skip Dick. He taught us the songs we use today and still sing them the way he did. \nThat group stayed together for about 5 years and then stopped. Our Dad and Mom didn’t want it to stop so they brought it home to here and started teaching some of our family around here. It was then that late Flora Joseph gave mom and dad the Paddle Welcome song. \nAfter dad passed in 1999\, Mom (Bernadette) wanted us to keep going on with the group because it was important to her and Dad to keep it breathing and alive. So today\, under Momma’s guidance\, we (Lyla and Beth) keep the group going strong over the last few years. With many performances like the recent Royal Tour\, we’ve been able to perform for the Queen as well when she was here a few years back and other government officials along with schools at all levels and festivals. \nThere are about 25 in our group when we are all together\, the youngest being Baby Jesse at 8 and Momma being our oldest going to be 79 this year\, truly blessed we are to have her along with all the amazing kids. \nThe group is highly sought after to represent the Lekwungen people at significant events throughout the region. They have performed to welcome visiting royalty\, the Lieutenant Governor and the Prime Minister\, Mayor and Councils and many others. One of their favourite performances is to greet Indigenous people from around the world. \n~ ~ ~ \nBeacon Hill Park is Victoria’s largest park located between the James Bay and Cook Street Village neighbourhoods\, roughly a 15-minute walk from downtown\, 5-minute walk from the Legislature (which is a major bus terminus\, including the #70 and #72 routes from the BC Ferry Terminal). Parking is limited in the park\, so we encourage alternate modes of transportation. Additional handicap parking will be created by the City of Victoria in the traffic loop on the east side of Douglas Street across from 250 Douglas Street near Avalon Road. \nThere will be no concession on site\, so please ensure you bring enough water and food for your stay. Please help the festival volunteers with clean-up after the event and “pack-it-in-pack-it-out“. There are mosquitos around the Cameron Bandshell at dusk\, so please also come prepared with insect repellent as needed. \nWonderment takes place on the unceded territories of the Lekwungen peoples\, the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations. Beacon Hill Park\, where this particular event takes place\, is traditionally called míq?n (MEE-qan) which means “warmed by the sun”. This seaward slope was a popular place for rest and play – a game similar to field hockey\, called Coqwialls\, was played here. At the bottom of the hill was a small\, palisaded village that was occupied intermittently from 1\,000 until approximately 300 years ago. The settlement was here for defence during times of war\, and it was also important for reef net fishing. The starchy bulbs of the wildflower\, Camas\, were an important food source gathered in this area. The hill here is also known as Beacon Hill. \nWonderment 2025 is supported by the Government of Canada\, the Province of BC\, the BC Arts Council\, the Capital Regional District\, and the City of Victoria. This event in particular is supported by the Open Space Gallery\, who are loaning their high-lumen laser projector and large projection screen for the evening performances. We are also grateful for the supports of Exclaim!\, The Georgia Straight\, The Capital Daily\, DL Sound\, Long & McQuade\, Modo Carshare Cooperative\, Sunbelt Rentals\, and the Inn at Laurel Point. \nSCHEDULE:\n4:00 PM – Lekwungen Traditional Dancers\n4:30 PM – Zügellos\n5:30 PM – Faun.a\n6:30 PM – Eva Pekárová\n7:30 PM – Elisa Thorn\n8:30 PM – Samuel Rohrer\n9:30 PM – Ruby Singh’s Vox.Infold\nThe event ends by 10:30pm \nOther FREE All-Ages Wonderment 10th Anniversary Edition Events:\n– Saturday\, August 2 (4pm-10pm) at Songhees Park Plaza (Johnson St Bridge)\n– Monday\, August 4 (1pm-7pm) at Banfield Park (521 Craigflower Road / Vic West) \nThere are also 19+ ticketed night-time dance-oriented Wonderment events on August 2 and August 3 at the Downbeat Event Centre. \nFull festival details at www.wonderment.ca

SUMMARY:Wonderment 2025: Cascadia Sound\, Freedom Engine (Mathew Jonson Live Ambient)\, Soft Error\, Righteous Rainbows of Togetherness & PJS at Banfield Park
DESCRIPTION:Note: While this event is FREE\, it is not a free event to produce in the community. Wonderment is modestly funded by government grants\, but still needs your help to keep these sorts of events going. Please bring cash to the event to donate\, or donate online through the website donate button at www.wonderment.ca \n~ FREE PERFORMANCES ~ \n~ FREEDOM ENGINE (MATHEW JONSON) ~\nLive Ambient Electronic Music Performance\nFrom Berlin \nOriginally from Victoria\, Mathew Jonson has developed one of the most distinctive voices in electronic music. When you hear one of Jonson’s songs\, you almost immediately know it’s his. And yet there’s no mistaking any given song for another. His music offers a rare fusion of populist intensities and nuanced musicality. His standards for sound and presentation are exacting. Both on stage and in the studio\, Jonson’s fealty to analog equipment and real-time playing; as opposed to mere layback serves as a standard bearer for a kind of electronic music that goes way beyond the drag ‘n’ drop world of digital composition. \nFreedom Engine is an alter alias of Mathew’s\, an outlet for unbridled expression as heard on the debut album “A Box Full of Magick” and at performances at electronic music festivals where intricate sound design and emotive electronics are held in high regard: Dekmantel\, Houghton and Mutek. Freedom Engine is also the name of the music academy founded by Mathew\, focused on music education and mentorship for a new generation of electronic musicians. \n~ RIGHTEOUS RAINBOWS OF TOGETHERNESS ~ \nFrom Basscoast to Rifflandia\, and a few editions of Wonderment along the way\, Righteous Rainbows’ technical wizardry and improvisational approach have made them one of BC’s most treasured live electronic music acts. While known for their dance floor antics\, they will be performing ambient in the park this year\, drawing from their ambient album “Astrobiology”. \n~ SOFT ERROR ~\nHot Sleepers Ambient Live-DJ Project\nfeaturing efemme & hrdvsion \nHaving played ambient as Efemme and Hrdvsion in 2021\, this husband-wife duo have returned to slay dancefloors in 2023 and as Hot Sleepers in 2024.For 2025\, they will perform as Hot Sleepers at The Downbeat on August 3\, and then perform an ambient set under their new moniker\, Soft Error. \n~ PJS ~ \nPJS serve up drones that evoke sunlight and shadows bouncing off a clearing of pine trees. Patrick Dique and Jordan Christoff have settled into an unabashedly psychedelic lane\, releasing albums on labels like Global Pattern\, Ume Records\, and Kudatah. Their latest\, Spirals\, arrives via Cosmic Winnetou\, and captures PJS at their most wooly and contemplative. The record is centered on heavenly drones\, which rarely evolve past a gentle hum. Spirals calls to mind a zoomed in glimpse at an intricately patterned tapestry\, which is probably why it was listed in the Best Ambient on Bandcamp in January 2025. \n~ CASCADIA SOUND ~ \nCascadia Sound is a collaborative project featuring Chris Rozek and DJ Dub Gnostic\, founders of Victoria’s Wonderment Music Festival. They originally met while active in the early 1990s Toronto electronic music scene\, where they were influenced by artists who regularly visited from Detroit\, Germany and the UK. They each made their own way to the west coast before reconnecting as Cascadia Sound in 2010. \n~ ~ ~ \nBanfield Park is located along the shoreline of the inner gorge waterway in Vic West\, roughly 20-30 minutes walking down the Galloping Goose pedestrian / cycling pathway from the Johnson Street Bridge. The park is located at 521 Craigflower Road on the #14 Bus Route\, behind the Vic West Community Centre (where public washrooms can be found). There is a kids playground on site and a swimming dock at the water. There will be no concession on site\, but there are nearby cafes and restaurants\, including Thai and Mexican food in the 800 block of Craigflower\, and the waterfront patio of Glo Restaurant across the Selkirk Trestle. Please come prepared for your water\, food\, sunscreen\, swimming and floating needs. And please pack-it-in\, pack-it-out! \nWonderment takes place on the unceded territories of the L?k?????n peoples\, the Esquimalt and Songhees First Nations. Banfield Park was traditionally used by local First Nations for canoe races and community gathering. \nWonderment 2025 is supported by the Government of Canada\, the Province of BC\, the BC Arts Council\, the Capital Regional District\, and the City of Victoria. We are also grateful for the supports of Open Space Gallery\, Exclaim!\, The Georgia Straight\, The Capital Daily\, DL Sound\, Long & McQuade\, Modo Carshare Cooperative\, the Vic West Community Centre\, Sunbelt Rentals\, and the Inn at Laurel Point. \nSCHEDULE:\n1:00 PM – PJS\n2:00 PM – Righteous Rainbows of Togetherness\n3:00 PM – Soft Error\n4:00 PM – Freedom Engine\n5:00 PM – Cascadia Sound\nThe event ends by 7:00pm \nOther FREE All-Ages Wonderment 10th Anniversary Edition events:\n– Saturday\, August 2 (4pm-10pm) at Songhees Park Plaza (Johnson St Bridge)\n– Sunday\, August 3 (4pm-10:30pm) at the Beacon Hill Park Cameron Bandshell \nThere are also 19+ dance-oriented ticketed events taking place on Aug 2 and Aug 3 at the Downbeat Event Centre. \nFull festival details at www.wonderment.ca
